Invited by the Trade Union IG Metall Berlin-Brandenburg, our group curated an exhibition that was displayed in the IG Metall building in Kreuzberg from 11th November 2016 to 7th January 2017.
We decided on torture as the topic and, with the support of an artist and member of the Kreuzberg group, we gained access to a striking but disturbing series of paintings by an anonymous Iranian artist. Her semi-abstract paintings reflect the experience of many Iranians in the 1980s. They are based on true stories by children and teenagers who were tortured, forced to commit torture themselves, or witnessed the torture of relatives. Hence the title of our exhibition, "Voices of Torture".
The vernissage in December was well attended and included a speech by the head of the IG Metall Berlin-Brandenburg, an oud recital by a Syrian musician, and readings from the exhibition texts.
This exhibition is now “on tour” in Lübeck and hopefully attracting many visitors.
